Dear Eoin, I did not mean to ruffle your feathers by adding "Lord" to your name. Please forgive me. Since you suggested it, why don't you start the Thread?

M'Lady,

It ought to really be a subforum where people can immediatly go if the fancy takes them rather than finding it in General Chat or such. I don't have the power.

Hi All

sorry not been around much lately, you see my Lovely wife died back in August and I haven't been very sociable, but getting back on track now.

Now then I cant see anything the forum needs, but I have to agree that the Roots and Stuff is a good idea, and feel it would need its own area to work properly.

I know its a bit late but, HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all :D
Yours Aye

Laird Rob, I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my heartfelt, but belated condolences. Life's a B...., but we got to keep going. Keep up the spirit. I never lost a spouse, but 1 year and 1 day after my my wedding, my mother died in Germany and that is exactly 18 years today. And I didn't find out about it for 6 weeks, because my sister send me a letter by regular mail from the Netherlands instead of calling me, and I never even been back to see her grave. But enough of my life's little vissisitutes. I am glad to see your face again.

Eoin, I will see what I can do about that Sub-Forum. If I can figure it out.

Let it be known to one and all, that there now is a Sub-Forum called "Roots and Branches", which I just created.

Lady Arwen
thank you so much for you very kind words.

its been a rough road to travel, made worse by the fact that when my dear Lady was in Hospital, I myself was severely ill at home and bedridden, and so could not make it to her when she passed. but I take some consulation that she is not suffering anymore.

Thanks once again and tale care
Yours Aye

"foist" or "hoist" on my own petard

Postby foist on my own petard » Tue Feb 17, 2009 5:58 pm

As I recall, I first saw the expression "foist on my own petard" in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. I can no longer recall which individual Tale or which translation it appears in. At any rate, there seems to be a longstanding debate over whether the word is correctly spelled "foist" or "hoist," in this context. I understand the expression also appears in one of Shakespeare's plays. I was told that the expression means, "I accidentally stabbed myself with my own sword." Some people say "petard" denotes a gun, not a sword. Perhaps a Lord or Lady has some more information on this.

A quick perusal of various websites defines "foist" as:
1. to force upon or impose fraudulently or unjustifiably (usually fol. by on or upon): to foist inferior merchandise on a customer.
2. to bring, put, or introduce surreptitiously or fraudulently (usually fol. by in or into): to foist political views into a news story.
The same site defines Petard as:
1. an explosive device formerly used in warfare to blow in a door or gate, form a breach in a wall, etc.
2. a kind of firecracker.
Ergo, Foist by one's petard would mean introducing your own explosive to a situation? Of course, I have always heard the term as meaning you got caught up by a trap you set for others.
I know it's not real, but it's fun!

That's how I always understood it: Caught in my own trap.

Hi Laird Peter,
I like the idea of a noticeboard on the forum that could be regularly updated by the site administrators etc. "Lochaber Wall" would be a great title for it.
Regards,
Lord Christopher
