Family Trees

Postby louise_hine » Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:48 am

Hi everyone!

I was just wondering if anyone here has traced their family tree, and how they went about it, and if they have any tips/advice for a beginner?

Thanks x

Louise........Genealogy is an exciting (& lifelong) hobby. Just start with what you know - name, date and location of birth/date and location of death; ask relatives; collect paper documentation; check the census online.

There are numerous websites that can aide you in your quest. Sometimes you can run across a distant cousin who has already done most of the work for you.

If I can help you more, please contact me offline via e-mail = jilleallford@yahoo.com.

http://www.familysearch.com has lots of info. It's free.
http://www.ancestry.com is a 'for pay' site which has U.S.,& U.K. Census & perhaps some Canadian.

Adoption is more difficult. In my case, I've had yDNA testing done on a male descendant to determine family name.

Again, if you will contact me direct - jilleallford@yahoo.com, I can help you further.

BTW, another very good source for info is http://www.rootsweb.com. It has content covering mailing lists for names, places. You can post your inquiry and get feedback once you're subscribed to the list you're interested in.

Also, http://www.genweb.com. Covers world-wide, once you find where you need info. from. ( you might need to search a little on this one, as I don't remember the link exactly.)

Happy Hunting.
