the Wright/MacIntyre Clan

Postby tinywright » Sun Feb 08, 2009 5:35 pm

the originator of the Clan was Maurice the Wright, who began the clan on the trade of the clan members which was shipwrights and carpenters, we were originally of the Macdonald Clan, which we are septed to,
Originally from Ulster, the clan settled in Aryll and the western Isles of Scotland, included Glen Etive.
I have traced the history back to the year 1013 and Olaf the Red of Viking royalty, and previous to this Somerled.
MacIntyre means "son of the wright", and due to an unlawful killing and the subsquent loss of the Clans Land, and also of the Highland Clearences, many Clansmen settled in other parts of the world, but some moved south from Scotland into England, and like others of the Clan, anglicised the name MacIntyre to Wright.
In Ardchatten church, there are stained Glass windows dedicated to Clan cheifs and clansmen.
My ancestors were foresters to the Stuarts of Appin, and supported them during the Battle of Culloden, whist other branches of the Clan were Hereditary Pipers to the Clan Menzies.
one Branch of the Clan were Part of the Clan Chattan the federation of approx 14 other Clans that offered protection to smaller Clans, this part of My Clan were the MacIntyres of Badenoch, there were also the Macintyres of Glenorchy.
During the Highland Clearences and the aftermath of Culloden, some were Gaoled at Southwark in South East London, which is also how some of my Immediate family came to be Londoners, some were in proper gaols whilst others were incarserated in Prison ships on the Thames...
Yours Aye

Very interesting Tiny Wright. I can't trace mine very far since I don't have my fathers background, he was born out of wedlock, something you did not do in the 1930s and was kept hush hush by my Grandmother. And the Jewish side of my family (my mother, msrip) was originally from Russia back in the mid 18 hundreds, and during the Revolutions, a lot of the public buildings were destroyed and no records can be found. My grandmother never even gave us the names of her siblings, and there were 28 kids in that family. It would really be nice if I could find them all.
