How do you correctly pronounce "Lochaber"?

Postby ahrc4karen44 » Mon Sep 07, 2009 3:38 am

Hi Ladies and Lords,
Forgive my ignorance, please, but perhaps we Yanks can be excused; just how does one say, "Lochaber"? Is it Loch-AAHB-er? or Locka-BURR? Or something else? I would appreciate some instruction. Thankyou.
Lady Karen

Hello. Your best bet is to go with Loch-AAHB-er

Look for a previus tread...I believe that Lady Laura put in a link to a scottish band singing a tune called "Lochaber no more" In that you can hear the right way to pronounce Lochaber...

ciamar a tha thu (how are you).this is quite an old subject, but i haven't seen it resolved as yet.firstly it is from the gaelic,loch-aber,two words.loch=lake in english.aber=at the mouth of.there are many instances of this, aberfeldy, aberdeen etc.all are from the gaelic.loch as in och,ach hard and rolling, never lock as you hear in non native gaelic speakers.aber in old gaelic the e is an indeterminent sound.something between an e/a soft and almost not heard in normal conversation.long winded i know, but pronounce as lochabr.let the r roll slightly.listen to a local and you will hear what i mean.

Thank you, grew up in Scotland and lived in Lochaber for a lot of my childhood so hopefully qualified to make a stab at the pronounciation :)
