History of the land

Postby Lord McDonald » Fri Nov 06, 2009 12:38 am

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the history of the land. I am a desendant of the McDonald's of Glencoe, and was wondering is this former clan land? Would be awesome to have regained a piece of family land after hundreds of years!

Hi Dene

Here is a link to a map showing the ancient Clans and their lands. Was interesting to see where my own Clan, Scott, originated from - Selkirk near the borders. You'll see that the MacDonalds were a very large Clan that were scattered over a wide area.

Here is a link to the Ballad of Glencoe (also known as The Massacre of Glencoe). It gives the lyrics and there is a (not very good) midi file at the top of the page with the tune.

There are some really good folk songs which tell a lot of the history of Scotland and the Clans by Alastair McDonald and also the Corries which are available on CD.

Hope this helps.

Hello Lord Macdonald. I am not well up on the history of the area, but if you go to tartanhen.co.uk/appin/glencoe.htm you will find a very comprehensive history of the Massacre.
Also en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacDonald_of_Glencoe gives a short history of the clan MacDonald of Glencoe.
I am a descendant of Macdonald of Sleat, from my paternal Grandmothers family. Sleat is a peninsula on the Isle of Skye and is often called “the Garden of Skye". Though I am a proud Welshman; I wear the kilt for special occasions, but always wear my Crest Badge:

Also, thank you very much Lady Fiona. The sites were very informative.

Hi All,
My family goes back to the MacNeills of The Isle of Barra.
I'd be most interested if anyone has any connection or information pertaining to this Clan. :P
